The biodiversity Picnic in Macedonia was organized by MAKMONTANA
- UNEP National Committee of the Republic of Macedonia in
co-operation with the Ministry of Environment and Physical
Planning. The biodiversity picnic took place on June 11; in
the garden of "Oreov Lad" national restaurant near
Skopje. Luckily, participants could enjoy the sunny and warm
weather. Among 35 participants there were representatives
from ministries, local governmental bodies, international
organizations, NGOs, the academic sector as well as from the
media.
Participants could get an insight about the threats the Invasive
Alien Species (IAS) can pose to the natural environment, and
were informed about the Convention on Biological Diversity,
the EMERALD network, as well as about the Natura 2000 Network.
Then all participants were invited to enjoy the traditional
food and to have open discussion. At the end of the informal
get-together guests concluded that inter-sectoral cooperation
with wide involvement of professions with different background
as well as public/private involvement should be reached in
order to conserve biodiversity effectively.
The event was realised with the support of CEEweb and UNEP
Regional Office for Europe.
