The World Environment Day in 2023 is a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matters. Plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040. Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans. It will be 24 tons by 2040! We need urgent action now. 

On 5 June 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. It is time to accelerate this action and transition to a circular economy.

Millions around the world understood how important is the global effort to protect our environment. World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. For this particular day we invented a special game, the ClimateQuest. 

Join our ClimateQuest Geocaching Challenge! Search for our hidden caches, explore new places and learn about climate change. Geocaching is the world´s largest treasure hunt game. The goal is to find a hidden treasure, a “cache,“ using a GPS. The cache is hidden in a place precisely determined by the coordinates. 

How to play Climate Quest? 

You have to read about cache hunting here, and know the rules, and the types of caches. In our partner countries we have several caches to find. We are using two types of caches, and you can search for them in many places in seven partner countries. 

In Bulgaria there are 9 caches in very special places. For example one cache is  installed on a bridge over the bypass cannel which protects the lake from floods.An other one is hidden on a spot where you can see flamingos. This  is a very popular place for flamingo watching in the last few years. More than 150 Great Flamingos appeared in the summer of 2019 and since then they are increasing their number to 1600. One of the main reasons for the appearance of this species is climate change and the warmer winters. 

In Slovakia there are 6 caches. One is in the Inland Delta, in the Danube „amazon“. Your search for this cache will take you to a place that symbolizes the human endeavor to subdue nature. 

In Latvia you have a chance to find 6 caches. One is around the River Noriņa. It will take you on a quick journey of nature’s treasures. The River Noriņa was blocked by an old mill dam for at least 100 years. The dam was interfering with the migration of naturally spawning salmon and trout. How was the living spark returned to the river and what is the significance of the river in the natural ecosystem? You will find your answer by searching the cache. 

In the Czech Republic one cache is hidden  at Mordor Viewpoint. Are you curious? We are. Do you like apocalyptic views? Then you came to the right place. When looking for this cache, you will be speechless looking at the large Turow open cast mine and the coal-fired power plant operated by PGE, which is the largest CO2 producer in Poland and the third largest emitter in the EU. PGE continues to pursue further expansion of the Turow lignite open cast mine to prolong the operation of the Turow coal plant by 2044. However, the operation of the mine is already causing conflict with the Czech and German communities affected by the mine, the inhabitants on the Czech side of the border have problems with the lack of groundwater due to mining and are afraid of a further increase in dust and noise.

One German cache out of 6 is in Emsauen. With this cache you will get to know the beautiful Emsauen in the German Münsterland. The Emsauen are a nature reserve that serve as a habitat for a great diversity of species. This short tour shows you how a harmonious coexistence of the residents of the adjacent city and nature with its creatures can work and what history is hidden behind their coexistence.
